Safety at home

Everybody lives a life with an unforeseen incident waiting to happen. Even when you are comfortably settled in at home, you never know what might happen. Therefore it becomes necessary to take preventative measures. In order to maximize the protection for your house and loved ones, ask yourself the following questions.

1. Do you have fire alarms? If yes how many.

One of the leading causes of fatal injuries in homes is smoke and fire, and fortunately it is preventable. Installing a fire alarm at home is the best way to protect your family against an accidental fire even when you are asleep. The fire alarm should however not be restricted to just the kitchen. Instead, make sure the living room and bedrooms have one too as these are the places everybody tends to be most of the time. Also keep a fire extinguisher handy, and within reach if need be.

2. How old is the electrical wiring in your house?

Electrical wires hardly concern us. Since they are hidden and well out of sight, nobody thinks twice about them. However a short circuit could lead to an electrical fire, which is often much harder to put out. Schedule regular checks of the wiring and fuses located inside your homes to ensure they are in top working order.

3. How prepared are you to deal with a serious accident?

Having a first aid kit is sometimes not enough, especially if someone in your family has a history of some illness. Keep all the medical documents and contact numbers in a place within quick reach. Identify the risky areas of your house and try to minimize the threat as much as you can. If you see a tangle of wiring, have the area cleared. All sharp and pointed objects should be kept out of reach of children.

4. When was the last time you had the locks reinstalled.

Make sure all the locks on your doors and windows are in good working condition. If you find one that is broken, don’t waste time in replacing it. Keep all the keys and spare keys in places you know you can find when needed.

While nothing can guarantee 100% safety, a little precaution goes a long way.
