With an increase in the number of car owners, traffic is at its all time worse. Hence almost everyone becomes a victim of road rage, at least once a week. With a busy schedule and low patience, everybody wants to be the first person to move ahead, blatantly ignoring the rules of the road. It therefore is immensely important for you to protect yourself against the unforeseen.
• Robbery/theft: While commuting, many times, people fall victim to theft and robberies. If you are travelling via public transport, make sure you keep your precious belongings in a bag or purse. Also be sure your bags are zipped shut. Clutch the bag in your arms tightly. If you are in your own vehicle, try to stick to the heavy traffic laden middle lane. Looters tend to avoid these as they hinder their escape.
• Travelling at night: If travelling at night becomes unavoidable, stick to well lit main streets only. Avoid shortcuts, especially if they take you through dark alleyways.
• Traffic signals: Follow traffic signals even if others break them. Rules are made for a reason. Follow them for your own safety. When your signal turns green, wait for a few seconds in to avoid crashing into someone breaking the signal from the opposite side.
• If you have to cross the road, wait for the cars to slow down. Then again, look both ways for incoming traffic, and cross only when sure the cars are not speeding in your direction.
• Seatbelts: Seatbelts have been known to prevent drivers from fatal injuries in most serious accidents. Make sure you are wearing one and have fastened it properly.
• Hang up and drive: Talking or texting on the phone is a major distraction and amounts to 70% or road accidents. Pay more attention to the road.
